The Shadow has I-Beam
construction. It has a
clean nose closure to
reduce snagging when you
are clipping or
unclipping. There is also
a handy thumb grip on the
gate for easier
operation. The normal
Shadow Quickdraw pairs
the Shadow up with the
Shadow Bent Gate – this
is the best option for
the majority of single
pitch sport routes.
However, there is a
lightweight alternative
designed for multi pitch
sport routes, where
saving weight is an
issue. The Shadow/Spectre
2 Quickdraw has a Shadow
at the bolt clipping end
of the quickdraw and the
lightweight Spectre 2 at
the rope clipping end.

The bent gate version of
the classic sport
climbing biner, the
Shadow, normally forms
the rope clipping end of
the quickdraw. We knew
the clipping action had
to be good so we made
sure the curve of the
gate was just right,
allowing the rope to be
pressed into the biner
with the minimum of fuss.
The inside of the biner
also has a deep basket to
ensure that the rope is
guided towards the spine
for added safety. The
Shadow is completely
anodised to help combat
corrosion and prolong
life in hot, damp or
salty environments. DMM

DMM have made some
subtle, but important
changes from the original
Spectre. For example it
has a safer, deeper
‘rope basket’ –
that being the techy term
for the crook of the
biner in which the rope
sits during a fall. The
design works better with
modern skinny Dyneema.
This means that the
quickdraw tape sits in a
neat and correctly
aligned position. One
final thing, the Spectre
2 is only 32g –
that’ll be 3g lighter
than the original
Spectre. After all,
every little bit counts
in the weight saving
