- hot & cold sweat, feeling weak & generally unwell. After 3 days in bed & feeling too poorly even to get a drink, my wife called out the emergency doctor. Following a number of checks he told me I had pneumonia & if still ill in a couple of days he would give me a sick certificate for work. He left the house at 18.30 & by 20.30 my wife had called an ambulance. When the paramedics arrived they said if I didn’t respond to treatment I had about 2 hours to live. At this point I was too weak to sit up, could not speak & was nearly blind. Once the paramedics had stabilised me I was taken into hospital, were I spent five & a half hours undertaking many checks including blood pressure which was 60/40, this was the cause of my eye sight failing. In the early hours I was moved to an intensive care ward were I spent 8 days, 7 of them being wired up to machines, my blood was black & so thick my heart couldn’t pump it round my body, this was causing my heart to stop when I slept. On the 9th day I was allowed home but could only walk with sticks, I had to return to the hospital for continual tests daily. In all I was absent from work for over 4 months & was only diagnosed with Weils disease 6 weeks after being released from hospital. Leptospirosis can stay in your body for up to 2 years & since having this deadly virus I get every cold & bug going. It’s not only rodents that carry the Leptospirosis bug, dogs, cows, foxes & pigs are also carriers. Each year about 10 million people around the world contract the disease, with a large percentage of them dying. I WAS ONE OF THE LUCKY ONES
