The Otamatone musical toy "sings" the notes of a tune, similar to that of a human voice. Cleverly shaped as a musical note, it consists of a touch sensitive stem that gives you the notes and vibrato function. To play, touch and slide your fingers up and down the stem and create the ultimate waaah waaah effect by squeezing the cheeks of the face at the base of the note.
Designed as one of the musical instruments of the Japanese Maywa Denki Voice Project, the Otamatone was developed for a special exhibition to see whether machines sing like a human being. One could say - "only in Japan" but this crazy instrument is going to prove a bizarre yet popular Christmas gift which we predict will be under Christmas trees all over. Simple to play and great fun - no previous musical experience is required. Dare we say it's just a bit of fun and not really meant for the seriously minded musician although, if early 70s Kraut rock bands like Kraftwerk could make a fortune out of inventing their own instruments and influencing electronic music, then what's stopping anyone from reaching the dizzying heights of musical stardom with the Otamatone.
After all, this singing instrument does have musical atttributes such as three octave settings which can be changed with a flick of a switch, although you can play a complete tune in just one octave range. Plus, it has two volume settings, just in case you infuriate the neighbours by attempting to finger "Stairway to Heaven" or "Smoke on the Water". Remember, it's not a guitar, it's an electronic crazy sounding "singing Toy". In fact with a little "practice" you'll be "play" your favourite tunes in no time.

Here s a gadget that may look like pure magical wizardry but in fact it should be identified, quite literally as the ultimate in €œtechnical wizardry. The fantastic Kymera "Magic Wand" is a BUTTONLESS remote control fashioned as a magic wand.In 2010 the Wand was featured on BBC s Dragon s Den. Duncan Bannatyne, arguably the most difficult Dragon to convince was so impressed, he invested £200, 000 in the business. The wand is a universal remote control that can be €œlearned up to thirteen infra- red commands. Each command or code can then be assigned a gesture. For instance, rotate the wand clockwise and anti-clockwise and this can adjust the volume. Or perhaps changing the channel on the television could be a simple flick up and flick down for channel up /down. Sounds fun? It is. However these magical gestures are all programmed into a highly technical piece of equipment. All 13 gestures can be programmed into one single device or split between several it s up to you; channel hopping on the TV, controlling hi-fis, DVD players, set-top boxes, iPod docks, and computers.Features and specificationsKymera Magic wand which is really a Universal Remote control13 progammable gestures just like a magic wandBig/Swish, Push forward, Pull Back and two single and double tapsAdjusting the volume - rotate the wand.Channel up and channel down - flick up and flick downCD track slip - Flick left and rightThe wand pulses when you are doing somethingWith a sleep mode when it's put down - pick it up or start moving it and it wakes with three heart beatsComes gift box iin a lovely looking "magic box"Requires 2 x AAA batteries (included)And finally, if you want to know how it works (and shatter the illusion), read the Techo Magic blurb below...Techno Magic €¦ €¦ It may be a magic wand, but it all powered by the wonders of modern science. The technology that powers the wand is based on science, but it is so advanced and so miniaturised that it might as well be magic. Based on the advances in motion sensing, the accelerometer that tells the wand s microprocessor how hard it is and in which direction accelerating was originally developed for use in cars. These tiny silicon architectures are microscopically small but can detect the force of gravity even at rest. They are the sort of thing that detects if you are slowing down very rapidly in a traffic accident and signals for the airbag to deploy, or you ll find them in mobile phones and cameras telling the device which way up to put the picture. The wand has a special three axis accelerometer that can measure the g force in x-y-and z. Using this information, and constantly updating the programme for the orientation of the wand, a special program on the onboard microprocessor can tell how the wand is being moved about. Using some clever maths the microprocessor determines if the move made by the wand bearer was a deliberate on and if so, whether or not it was one of the predefined gestures programmed into it at manufacture. If it recognises the gesture then the wand s microprocessor plays back the infra red remote code that it has been taught by the user to associate with that gesture. A very small vibration motor similar to that found in a mobile phone gently pulses inside the wand to give what is called haptic feedback to the user so that they know that the wand has understood the gesture and has emitted an infrared remote control code. The whole assembly is squeezed into the shape of a wand, and put together so that there are no visible seams and no unsightly screws to give the game away and that s it, the Kymera Wand. It s simple really. Spin back 50 or 100 years and what the wand does would have been real magic, but if you spin back a further 200 years it s likely you would have been burnt at the stake for using the Kymera Wand. But then you wouldn t have had a 72inch plasma screen to magically control.

Know any Dr Who fans? Well, buying stuff for those keen on the timelord is a breeze as they've gotta be the easiest people to buy gifts for! From the earliest incarnations of William Hartnell and John Pertwee right through to David Tennant and the eleventh Doctor, Matt Smith, The Doctor has become a Saturday night icon on small screens everywhere. So this replica of one of the most famous props on television now takes the form of a universal remote control thanks to those clever people who invented the Kymera remote control wand of BBC Dragon's Den fame.
Ever since Patrick Troughton, the second Doctor, first produced it from his jacket, the SONIC SCREWDRIVER has been Doctor Who's most valued, iconic, coveted, not to mention extremely cool gadget. Now, for the first time, Doctor Who fans have the opportunity to transport a little bit of the Time Lord s technology into their own homes.
A high quality metal replica of the Mark VII Sonic Screwdriver currently used by the 11th Doctor, Matt Smith, the new Sonic Screwdriver Universal Remote Control is a gesture-based universal remote control that utilises infrared (IR) technology to manipulate almost all earth-based home entertainment systems - from TVs and iPod docks to DVD/Blu-ray players and beyond.
With a green flashing tip and an impressive four operational modes including a practice mode and three memory banks, a total of 39 commands can be stored in the Sonic Screwdriver Universal Remote Control, giving the option of operating multiple home entertainment devices with just a different flick of the wrist.
Control is straightforward even for humans. The Sonic Screwdriver Universal Remote Control works through a series of 13 short gestures, such as rotating, flicking or tapping, and a guided set-up procedure uses spoken prompts to match gestures to commands learned from existing remote controls.
And, for those fans who wish to transport a little more of the Time Lord into their own homes, the FX operational mode features a range of authentic vintage Doctor Who sound effects. All unauthorised alien usage of your this device can be avoided as the Sonic Screwdriver Universal Remote Control comes with an inbuilt security setting - a three digit PIN can be set by the primary user - offering ultimate human control of the ultimate alien device.
