Prostate Protective
Most men over 50 suffer with enlargement of the prostate gland known as benign prostate hyperplasia or hypertrophy (BPH). BPH appears to be caused by an elevation of the powerful androgen dihydrotestosterone (DHT) & oestrogen in prostate tissue. Saw palmetto is clinically proven to treat prostate enlargement & its associated symptoms such as frequent urination, difficulty or pain when passing urine & impotence. The active fatty acids & sterols of this plant have been found to inhibit DHT's transport & binding to cell receptors, as well as reducing the activity of 5-alpha-reductase, the enzyme needed for oestrogen production & for conversion of testosterone to DHT.
Ovarian Protective
The clinical research into the ability of saw palmetto to treat BPH may have far-reaching implications for treatment of certain female hormonal dysfunctions, especially polycystic ovaries. This increasingly common condition is also associated with elevated DHT & oestrogen, & thus may be very responsive to saw palmetto therapy.
DHT Inhibitor in ' Male-Pattern' Baldness
It appears that elevated levels of DHT in the scalp trigger the primary mechanism of male pattern baldness. Although clinical research is currently lacking with respect to this use of saw palmetto, the theory behind its use for this purpose is sound (although the required dosage may well differ from that which has been shown to be effective in BPH).
DHT Inhibitor in Hormonally-induced Hair Loss (Women)
As with male-pattern baldness, elevated DHT can also lead to 'male pattern' hair loss in women, suggesting a potential value to saw palmetto. Not surprisingly, this problem appears to be especially common in women who suffer with polycystic ovaries (see above).
DHT Inhibitor in excessive Facial & Body Hair (Women)
DHT also appears to be the prominent factor in women suffering with hirsuitism (excessive facial and/or body hair). This condition often, though not always, accompanies hormonally-induced hair loss & polycystic ovaries, & may warrant the use of saw palmetto.
