In The Secret Life of Birds, lifelong bird enthusiast Colin Tudge explores the extraordinary variety, secret history & hidden importance of birds around the world. Birds are beautiful, intriguing & life-enhancing. They can do everything mammals can, & even more besides. Collected here are birds who navigate using the stars, tool-making crows, territorial robins, cooperative penguins & swans who mate for life
- among hundreds of others. Revealing everything from why birds sing to how they fly, think, bond & survive, from how they evolved (and whether it really is from dinosaurs) to why, in so many ways, they are very much like us, this rich, evocative book will make you love & admire the birds that are all around you. Enjoyable.. .entertaining.. .masterful. (Stephen Moss, Guardian). Simply fizzing with ideas.. .his heart is with the birds. (Literary Review). Inspired... Tudge's writing is always clear & frequently embellished with wry humour. (Richard Fortey, Sunday Telegraph). Only when we read this scintillating study do we see how little we've known about the creatures we see around us. (Michael Kerrigan, Scotsman Books of the Year). An author whose own deep relish for the extraordinary lives of birds seems only marginally less pleasurable to him than sharing that wonder with others. (BBC Wildlife Magazine). When Colin Tudge was a small boy, he could recognize only five kinds of birds. After studying zoology at Cambridge, Colin wrote for the New Scientist & was a documentary maker for BBC radio. His other books, also published by Penguin, include The Secret Life of Trees & So Shall We Reap: What's Gone Wrong with the World's Food
- & How to Fix It.

The life of William Shakespeare, Britain`s greatest dramatist, was inextricably linked with the history of London. Together, the great writer & the great city came of age & confronted triumph & tragedy. Triumph came when Shakespeare`s company, the Chamberlain`s Men, opened the Globe playhouse on Bankside in 1599, under the patronage of Queen Elizabeth I. Tragedy touched the lives of many of his contemporaries, from fellow playwright Christopher Marlowe to the disgraced Earl of Essex, while London struggled against the ever-present threat of riots, rebellions & outbreaks of plague. Catharine Arnold tells how acting came of age. We learn about James Burbage, founder of the original Theatre in Shoreditch, who carried timbers across the Thames to build the Globe among the bear-gardens & brothels of Bankside, & of the terrible night in 1613 when the theatre caught fire during a performance of King Henry VIII. Rebuilt, the Globe continued to stand as a monument to Shakespeare`s genius until 1642 when it was destroyed on the orders of Oliver Cromwell. & finally we learn how 300 years later, Shakespeare`s Globe opened once more upon the Bankside, to great acclaim, rising like a phoenix from the flames Arnold creates a vivid portrait of Shakespeare & his London from the bard`s own plays & contemporary sources, combining a novelist`s eye for detail with a historian`s grasp of his unique contribution to the development of the English theatre. This is a portrait of Shakespeare, London, the man & the myth. ...

Known to have existed in Classical times & still being made for a mass market, globes represent the oldest continuous technique for picturing the Earth & heavens. Originally aids to philosophy, the Renaissance saw their development as compendia of rapidly expanding geographical & astronomical knowledge, & as instruments of navigation & cosmography. They have been produced as simple spheres & as sophisticated mechanical devices, as toys & as high -status furniture; used as classroom & other demonstrational tools & as a symbol in the art of many periods. Until the onset of modern industrial techniques, their manufacture as plaster, wood or metal spheres was complex & laborious, & the skills required for their graphic construction & publication no less so. The National Maritime Museum at Greenwich has one of the world's largest & finest collections of globes, comprising over 300 items including terrestrial & celestial examples, armillary spheres & planispheres. Many of these themselves derive from earlier holdings, such as the Barberini, Landau, & Gabb collections, which were acquired en bloc for the Museum in its formative years through the activities of its principal benefactor, Sir James Caird (1864-1954). The Greenwich collection has now been fully catalogued by one of the leading authorities on Western globes, Dr Elly Dekker, who undertook the task from 1993 to 1995 as the Museum's first Sackler Fellow in the History of Astronomy & Navigational Sciences. The catalogue

Includes::
full entries on all items in the Museum's collection, the overwhelming majority being illustrated. There are also nine introductory essays by Dr Dekker & other NMM specialists, & an integrated section on the Museum's Islamic globes, introduced & catalogued by Dr Silke Ackermann of the British Museum.
