Bristling with inspired observations & wild anecdotes, this collection offers unique insight into the voice & mind of the inimitable Hunter S. Thompson, as recorded over the decades in the pages of Playboy, the Paris Review, Esquire, in various lectures, & in television appearances, many in print for the first time. Fearless & unsparing, the interviews detail some of the most storied episodes of Thompson`s life: his savage beating at the hands of the Hell`s Angels, his talking football with Nixon on the 1972 Campaign Trail (`the only time in twenty years of listening to the treacherous bastard that I knew he wasn`t lying`); his razor-sharp insight into the Bush--Cheney administration, his unlikely run for Sheriff of Aspen, & his successful public battle, during the last years of his life, to free an innocent woman from prison. In addition, Hunter Thompson`s passionate tirades about journalism, culture, drugs, guns, & the law showcase his singular voice at its fiercest. Complete with an exclusive introduction by author, journalist, & cultural critic Christopher Hitchens, Ancient Gonzo Wisdom genuinely embraces the brilliance of Hunter S. Thompson -- his life, his voice, & his legacy -- to provide an enduring portrait of the great gonzo journalist. ` Four years after his death, the rapid-fire wit & venom of Thompson`s writing is undiminished. Ancient Gonzo Wisdom features classic HST interviews` GQ ...

Carrowkeel Passage Tomb in Sligo is an extensive Neolithic passage tomb undisturbed since its excavation in 1911. Robert Praeger, one of the excavators, described being one of the first to enter the tomb: `I lit three candles & stood awhile, to let my eyes accustom themselves to the dim light. There was everything, just as the last man had left it, three to four thousand years before.` On an isolated hillside, the tomb is in almost the same undisturbed condition today. Ireland is rich in such monuments. Tarquin Blake & Fiona Reilly explore & document over 140 historic sites across the thirty-two counties. These range from megalithic tombs & round towers to monasteries & castles, as well as the more recent Martello towers & windmills. An engrossing catalogue of remarkable heritage sites is revealed. Ancient Greece - Utopia & Reality

Created 2, 300 years ago at the wish of Alexander the Great, Alexandria is still the largest city in the Mediterranean world. It evokes a succession of images - the Tomb of Alexander, the Pharos, the Library, Antony and Cleopatra, Cavafy and Durrell, all reminders of its magnificence and cultural influence. Over the centuries it has known many setbacks. In 1820, with the advent of Mohammed Ali, it began to reawaken, and became a model of cosmopolitanism of which many still regret the passing. Today, with the building of the great new library, the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, the city is again looking to the future.
