On an icy January day the Reykjavik police are called to a block of flats where a body has been found in the garden: a young, dark-skinned boy, frozen to the ground in a pool of his own blood. The discovery of a stab wound in his stomach extinguishes any hope that this was a tragic accident. Erlendur & his team embark on their investigation with little to go on but the news that the boy`s Thai half-brother is missing. Is he implicated, or simply afraid for his own life? The investigation soon unearths tensions simmering beneath the surface of Iceland`s outwardly liberal, multicultural society. A teacher at the boy`s school makes no secret of his anti-immigration stance; incidents are reported between Icelandic pupils & the disaffected children of incomers; &, to confuse matters further, a suspected paedophile has been spotted in the area. Meanwhile, the boy`s murder forces Erlendur to confront the tragedy in his own past. Soon, facts are emerging from the snow-filled darkness that are more chilling even than the Arctic night.* Book 5 in the Reykjavik Murder Mysteries series* ...

” In 1912, the SS Birmingham approaches India. On board is Morgan Forster, novelist & man of letters, who is embarking on a journey of discovery. As Morgan stands on deck, the promise of a strange new future begins to take shape before his eyes. The seeds of a story start to gather at the corner of his mind: a sense of impending menace, lust in close confines, under a hot, empty sky. It will be another twelve years, & a second time spent in India, before A Passage to India, E. M. Forster`s great work of literature, is published. During these years, Morgan will come to a profound understanding of himself as a man, & of the infinite subtleties & complexity of human nature, bringing these great insights to bear in his remarkable novel. At once a fictional exploration of the life & times of one of Britain`s finest novelists, his struggle to find a way of living & being, & a stunningly vivid evocation of the mysterious alchemy of the creative process, Arctic Summer is a literary masterpiece, by one of the finest writers of his generation.” ...

Arctic Dreams

Winner of the National Book Award and a best-seller upon publication in 1986, Arctic Dreams is now acknowledged as a classic, a book that re-defined the genre of nature writing. In prose of transparent beauty, Lopez celebrates the Arctic landscape and the animals and people that live there. He recounts massive migrations by land, sea and air, the epic voyages of explorers, distant mountain that is actually a looming mirage. But he also looks deep into our dreams and the strange fascination that the Arctic exerts over our imaginations. Why do we find such a hostile, elemental environment so beautiful, so full of magic, so rich in ideas about how we should live our lives?
