Bankside area of London in 1873 in a series of exceptionally detailed reproductions of old Ordnance Survey street plans for areas of larger cities which have undergone substantial redevelopment in the late 19th or the early 20th century, published in the Alan Godfrey Editions. The plans, printed in back & white, have been taken from the original Ordnance Survey mapping at 1:1, 056 & reproduced at 1:1, 760 – the equivalent of 36 inches (or one yard) to a mile. The maps provide an unrivalled, house-by-house picture of streets & individual buildings with inner courtyards, outbuildings, pavements, covered passages, etc. Many important institutions are named; within the National Galley on Trafalgar Square even the individual rooms (the map is from 1871, so no French Impressionists as yet!). On the reverse are historical notes about the area covered by the map, plus extracts from contemporary street directories. These maps provide a fascinating addition to Alan Godfrey’s huge series of some 2, 000 titles presenting reproductions of street plans at taken from the Ordnance Survey mapping at 1:2, 500 (25” to 1 mile) & reprinted at about 15 inches to one mile (1:4, 340). ...

On the south bank of the Thames & demarcated by Blackfriars & Tower Bridges lies the district known as Bankside, the Borough & Southwark. Its origin was in a Roman settlement nestling around the southern end of London Bridge, until the eighteenth century the only bridge across the Thames in London. Being separated only by the Thames from the City of London & outside the City`s jurisdiction, it developed as a place for bawdy & disreputable entertainment & leisure
- including the Globe Theatre made famous by performing William Shakespeare`s plays. It was an area also sought out for its `stews` which were some of London`s most notorious brothels where every taste could be catered for. Borough High Street contained proportionately more inns & taverns than anywhere else in Britain
- & some were immortalised by Chaucer & Dickens. The George alone survives to give some idea of what these ancient hostelries were like. From a time when London was a collection of discrete districts & villages, here is the long history of Bankside, the metropolis`s disreputable & licentious yet vibrant, cosmopolitan underbelly.

No single living artist has created as many myths, rumours & legends as Banksy. Many of the tales in this book are from Bristol, some are from further afield. What they share is that they are all told with the wide eyed wonder which Banksy inspires. Collated between 2009 & 2011 some of these stories are quite old & have been told so many times they have become the stuff of legend, others are more questionable & best described as myths. Some are laugh out loud bollocks & others are simply gossip. You be the judge. ...
