Who was the first king of ancient Egypt, & who was the last? Which Egyptian queens ruled in their own right? What in fact do we know about the 170 or more pharoahs whose names have down to us? This book sets down in narrative form, using timelines, & other visual aids throughout, all the rulers & dynasties of Egypt in their chronological order, from Narmer, who first united the lands along the Nile, to Cleopatra 3000 years later. The biographical portraits of each pharoah build into a history of ancient Egypt. This is at once a work of popular history, a reference tool, & a visual introduction to the extraordinary diversity & richness of an ancient civilization. Other work by the author

Umberto Eco was an international cultural superstar. A celebrated essayist as well as novelist, in this, his last collection, he explores many aspects of the modern world with irrepressible curiosity & wisdom. A crisis in ideological values, a crisis in politics, unbridled individualism – the familiar backdrop to our lives: a ‘liquid society’ where it’s not easy to find a polestar, though stars & starlets are not lacking. In these pieces, written by Eco as articles for his regular column in l’ Espresso magazine, he brings his dazzling erudition & keen sense of the everyday to bear on topics such as popular culture & politics, being seen, conspiracies, the old & the young, mobile phones, mass media, racism, good manners & the crisis in ideological values. It is a final gift to his readers – astute, witty & illuminating. ...

Chrysalis And The Secrets Of Metamorphosis

Before Darwin, before Audubon, before Gilbert White, there was Merian. An artist turned naturalist, known for her botanical illustrations, Maria Sybilla Merian was born in Germany just sixteen years after Galileo proclaimed that the earth orbited the sun. But at the age of fifty she sailed from Europe to the New World on a solo scientific expedition to study insect metamorphosis - an unheard-of journey for any naturalist at that time, much less an unaccompanied woman. When she returned she produced a book that secured her reputation, only to have it savaged in the nineteenth century by scientists who disdained the work of `amateurs`. Exquisitely written and illustrated, ”Chrysalis” takes us from golden-age Amsterdam to the Surinam tropics to modern laboratories where Merian`s
insights fuel a new branch of biology. Kim Todd brilliantly brings to life a seventeenth-century woman whose boldness and vision would still be exceptional today and restores her to her rightful position amongst those scientists who have changed the way we view the world.
