My Life as an Explorer is a classis of Polar literature, written by the one man to do more to further the exploration of both Polar Regions than any other person. First sailing to the Antarctic in the 1899 Belgian expedition, Amundsen never lost his passion for exploring, following this trip with a journey around the top of Canada to prove the existence of the North West Passage between 1903 & 1906. Setting sail for the Antarctic a full month or so after Scott, Amundsen still managed to beat the British team to the Pole by a full month. Making a lot of money out of shipping during the First World War, Amundsen followed his epic journeys by being only the second man to travel around the top of Siberia from Atlantic to Pacific oceans, then flying over the North Pole by airship. He died in 1928. ...

The third in a major series of eyewitness accounts into history, disaster, war, travel & exploration, written by the people who were there, those who not only wrote about the event but who experienced it. World-changing events are rare & it is even rarer to be able to write about them from the viewpoint of an eyewitness. Here is one such story, that of Herbert Ponting, photographer on the Terra Nova expedition of 1910-13. When we think of Scott of the Antarctic, we look at the images of Herbert Ponting, an experienced photographer & cameraman from Salisbury. His haunting photos of Antarctica rate as some of the most stunning ever taken & his skill behind the lens has left us a lasting legacy of Robert Falcon Scott. His tale of the expedition also rank as a classic of travel & exploration literature. This is his story! ...

Eyewitness Decade

From the inauguration of the London Eye in 2000 to the 2009 Copenhagen climate change summit, Eyewitness Decade tells the story of the first ten years of the new millennium in a series of stunning and awe-inspiring images. Some record the unfolding of major world events: 9/11, the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan, the financial crisis of 2008, and President Obama's inauguration. Others tell more local and personal stories: a man sleeping rough in Cambridge, chess-players in Budapest, and patients receiving treatment in Havana. Some explore the world of nature and natural disasters (Hurricane Katrina, an eruption on Mount Etna), while others celebrate human ingenuity and creativity (London Fashion Week, the Large Hadron Collider in Geneva). And a handful look at the quirkier side
of life: a banker with 350 body piercings, workers cleaning Big Ben's four clock faces, and Gala Bingo in south London. Together these extraordinary images build in to a rich and kaleidoscopic view of a tumultuous decade.
