On February 16 2016, motorcycle adventurer Charley Boorman suffered a major road traffic accident in Portugal. Having spent the better part of his life on some form of motorbike, his world came crashing down after he was knocked off a Triumph Tiger Explorer, smashing his right ankle & causing severe damage to his left fibia & tibia. It was unclear if he would ever walk properly again, let alone ride a motorbike. Moving between past & present, Long Way Back recounts Charley`s journey back of recovery, the ambulance ride, the numerous operations in a Portuguese hospital, the medivac aircraft flight back to London. In alternating chapters, as his inability to walk for several months provokes introspection, Boorman recounts his childhood, where his passion for motorbikes began, & the formative influences in his life
- from his father, a touring film director, to his long-time friend Ewan Mc Gregor, & Sean Connery`s son Jason, who first introduced him to bikes. As Charley struggles to cope with this potentially life-changing situation, it is these touchstones who will give him strength on the long way back to health.

February 16, 2016: motorcycle adventurer Charley Boorman suffers a major road traffic accident in Portugal, breaking his hand & ankle & shattering his left leg. It`s unclear if he`ll ever walk properly again, let alone ride a motorbike. Bed-bound in a foreign hospital far from home, a lengthy recovery period awaits. For the son of a touring film director, used to being on the road in one way or another since childhood, it`s an unwelcome change. Charley`s life has always been all about the challenge: but now he`s facing a challenge of a different sort. Told in his own words, Long Way Back is a story of a recovery. More than that, however, it`s a story of a life lived without fear; from child actor to painter-&-decorator to television presenter & professional biker, always on the lookout for the next adventure. It`s the story of how an unconventional upbringing led to an unconventional adulthood
- with all its highs & lows, epic journeys & broken bones. Mostly, though, it`s the story of one man & his motorbikes.

Long Walk

This is one of the world`s greatest stories of adventure, survival and escape. SlavomirRawicz was a young Polish cavalry officer. On 9th November 1939, he was arrested by the Russians and after brutal interrogation in Moscow`s infamous Lubyanka prison and a farce of a trial, he was sentenced to 25 years` hard labour in the Gulags, for `spying`. After a three-month journey to Siberia in the depths of winter, he escaped with six companions, realising that to stay in the camp meant almost certain death. In June 1941, they crossed the trans-Siberian railway and headed south, climbing into Tibet and, finally, freedom nine months later in March 1942, after travelling on foot for 4, 000 miles through some of the harshest regions in the world, including the Gobi Desert. By the end, he
weighed just five stone and 3 of the 7 had died.
