1945: The war was over, & the families who lived in Magnolia Square could look forward to their men coming home & their lives returning to normal. But for some, the end of the war brought serious problems. Kate Voigt was at last able to marry Leon Emmerson, the man she loved, a Londoner like herself, but of mixed race. When old man Harvey, a powerful & wealthy figure in South London & great-grandfather to Kate`s small son, heard of the match he was determined that young Matthew should not be raised by Leon. Slowly, insidiously, he began the fight to wrest Kate`s son away from her. & for Jewish refugee Christina, who had married Jack Robson, a commando & the handsomest man in the Square, the end of the war brought its own special torment. She was convinced that her mother & grandmother had somehow escaped the holocaust & were alive. It seemed that her determination to find them could put everything, even her marriage, at risk. As Magnolia Square, scarred & battered, but still surviving, prepared to enjoy the ` Peace`, so the inhabitants of the Square begin to try & rebuild their lives. ...

Here the photographers of Magnum, 50 years after the legendary group began its documentary mission, address the world following the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989; a period which has seen the triumph of US capitalism at one extreme & the resurgence of ancient blood feuds at the other. The book is built around photo-essays selected & introduced by the photographers, many shot especially for the book. From Henri Cartier-Bresson to Magnum`s newest recruits, each photographer navigates the issues of history in their own way
- some tackling the dramatic changes in the world head-on in the traditional manner of the ”concerned photographer”, others choosing subjects & aesthetic viewpoints which are entirely personal. The result is an album of contemporary photography about the world today. ” Magnum” is introduced by historian, broadcaster & cultural commentator Michael Ignatieff, linking the substance & pace of change in the post-Cold-war world with the historic role of the Magnum witness & image-maker. This is a book about history & humanity, journalism & art, & revealing the photographers of Magnum entering a new era.

There are few things that unify people across the world better than the game of football. More than just kicking a ball about, football stirs passions beyond rational thought, affecting the mood of a nation or even the fortunes of a government. Since the 1930s various members of Magnum have photographed the world of football, documenting the teams, the supporters & the game, from barefeet on African mud or a Brazilian beach to kicking cans in the backstreets of Newcastle. This collection shows how deep the roots of football run & how wide they are spread, how football culture crosses every boundary of nationality, race & religion, how it throws up important social issues such as the empowerment of women through football in Iran & the bitter religious rivalry between Glasgow`s two teams Rangers & Celtic. This portfolio of images combines the beauty of the game itself with the aesthetic quality associated with the photographers of Magnum & provides a celebration of the `world game` as well as a fascinating social portrait of the world over a period of more than half a century ...

The changing faces of Irel&--social, political, & cultural--documented by some of the greatest photographers of the modern era. Since the invention of photography, Ireland has been a magnet for photographers, but this book is unique in bringing together the work done by the unrivaled talents of the members of Magnum. From Ireland`s first attempts to forge a modern identity in the 1950s to the confident country of the twenty-first century, here is a stunning survey of a beautiful & complex place & people, through times of peace as well as trouble. The photographs reflect the extraordinary insights of Henri Cartier-Bresson, Elliott Erwitt, Josef Koudelka, Inge Morath, Erich Lessing, Eve Arnold, Martine Franck, Martin Parr, Bruce Gilden, Donovan Wylie, Stuart Franklin, & others. They bring a truly international perspective to the book, reflecting the sensibilities of America, France, Germany, Iran, Japan, Morocco--&, of course, Ireland itself. Organized decade by decade, the images show the lingering influence of rural life in the 1950s; the hidden story of ordinary Irish men & women--as well as the sectarian conflict--during the uneasy 1960s & 1970s; renewed confidence & the growth of prosperity & peace as the century passed through its last two decades; & the robust ” Celtic tiger” of today. Each decade has commentary & context supplied by one of the most notable Irish writers of our time. With texts by: John Banville, Anthony Cronin, Anne Enright, Eamonn Mc Cann, Nuala O` Faolain, Fintan O` Toole, & Colm Toibin. Over 250 photographs in color & duotone.
