The Paper Trail tells the story of how a simple Chinese product has for two millennia allowed knowledge, ideas & religions to spread at an unprecedented rate around the world. Alexander Monro traces this groundbreaking invention`s voyage, beginning with the Buddhist translators responsible for its spread across China & Japan, & follows it westward along the Silk Road, where it eventually became the surface of the Quran. Once paper reached Europe, it became indispensable to the scholars who manufactured the Renaissance & Reformation from their desks. A witty, personal & entertaining reflection on the history & meaning of paper during the (passing) era of its universal importance. Paper serves nearly every function of our lives. Still, there are some uses of paper that seem unlikely to change

Paper is one of the simplest & most essential pieces of human technology. For the past two millennia, the ability to produce it in ever more efficient ways has supported the proliferation of literacy, media, religion, education, commerce & art. It has created civilisations, fostering the fomenting of revolutions & the stabilising of regimes. History`s greatest press run produced 6.5 billion copies of Mao zhu xi yu lu, "ations from Chairman Mao Tse-tung (Zedong) & Leonardo da Vinci left behind only 15 paintings but 4, 000 works on paper. Now, on the cusp of ”going paperless”-and amid speculation about the effects of a digitally dependent society-we`ve come to a world-historic juncture to examine what paper means to civilisation. Through tracing paper`s evolution, Mark Kurlansky challenges common assumptions about technology`s influence, affirming that paper is here to stay. Paper will be the history that guides us forward in the twenty-first century. ...
