At the beginning of the twenty-first century, India stood on the brink of an exciting new era. Yet only a decade later, a series of corruption scandals & acts of violence against women had tarnished the nation`s image & slowed her economic growth. When Narendra Modi became India`s fifteenth prime minister in May 2014, he promised to revitalise a nation which seemed to have lost its way. Rogue Elephant uncovers the gripping struggle between powerful vested interest groups & those trying to foster change. Simon Denyer exposes the failures that undermined India`s self-confidence & paved the way for Modi`s triumphant victory, but also examines the heroic efforts of those who are fighting for a better future in the world`s largest democracy. ...

At the beginning of the twenty-first century, India seemed to stand on the brink of an exciting new era. Second only to China as the fastest growing major economy in the world, gleaming shopping malls were being built around the country to service a rapidly expanding middle class, & mobile phones were reaching even the remotest villages. The installation of Manmohan Singh as Prime Minister in 2004 seemed to promise more good times ahead. Singh had unleashed `shining` India`s potential more than a decade before as finance minister, introducing the liberalising economic reforms that had set the country on a new course towards prosperity. Yet a decade later, the dream has crumbled. A series of corruption scandals has badly tarnished the nation`s image & undermined its self-confidence, while the economy has slowed & violence against women has dominated the headlines. Their country is no longer `shining` & Indians are left wondering where the magic has gone. Reporting from across India, meeting activists, farmers, factory & office workers & media figures, & interviewing influential political leaders including Narendra Modi, Rahul Gandhi & Arvind Kejriwal, Denyer exposes the battles taking place all across the nation between powerful vested interests & those trying to foster change. By delving into many of the country`s most troublesome issues, from gender relations to education, from corruption to populist politics, he analyses the Indian malaise &, equally important, discovers signs of new & vigorous life & a deep desire for change. If the world`s largest democracy can control the greed, corruption & bad governance that bedevils it, its future may indeed be truly dazzling. ...

Rogue waves remain something of a mystery. Long believed to be a myth or an exaggeration, they haven`t been the subject of any kind of serious in-depth research
- until now. This book makes rigorous marine science accessible to all, exploring the causes & frequency of rogue waves, & the reasons why some waves become killer monsters. With anecdotes, historical reports & objective analysis, all illustrated with evocative & rare photographs, Michel Olagnon`s groundbreaking book is a definitive contribution to our understanding of this much-feared phenomenon. Amongst other questions in the book, he examines:- How are rogue waves created?- How do they live & die?- Are there different types?- Do they appear from nowhere?- Can ships & boats cope with them?- What lessons can be learned from past encounters?- Will meteorologists be able to provide warnings? Authoritative but highly readable, this is a fascinating & unique study into rogue waves, offering insights for all readers, but crucial advice for those who might encounter this dangerous phenomenon at sea.

Rogerson`s Book Of Numbers: The Culture Of Numbers From 1001 Nights To
The Seven Wonders Of The World

Rogerson`s Book of Numbers tells the stories behind our iconic numbers. It is based on a numerical array of virtues, spiritual attributes, gods, devils, sacred cities, powers, calendars, heroes, saints, icons and cultural symbols. It provides a dazzling mass of information for those intrigued by the many roles numbers play in folklore and popular culture, in music and poetry, and in the many religions, cultures and belief systems of our world. The stories unfold from millions to zero: from the number of the beast (666) to the seven deadly sins, the twelve signs of the zodiac to the four suits of a pack of cards. Along the way you will discover why Genghis Khan built a city of 108 towers, how Dante forged his Divine Comedy on the number eleven, and why thirteen is so unlucky
in the west while fourteen is the number to avoid in China. Now available as a paperback, this is your pocket-book guide to the numerical mysteries of the universe.
