Other Americas, originally published in France in 1986 & designed by Lelia Wanick Salgado, is Sebastiao Salgados first book. Upon publication it became an award-winning photobook classic, establishing Salgados reputation as the visionary reportage photographer of his generation. With forty-nine black-&-white photographs taken between 1977 & 1984, Salgados distilled survey of a continent

images from Brazil, Ecuador, Bolivia, Peru, Guatemala, & Mexico. The images range in subject, capturing spiritual & religious practices, changing rural landscapes, & intimate domestic life. In the spring of 1992, Nat Philbrick was in his late thirties, living with his family on Nantucket, feeling stranded & longing for that thrill of victory he once felt after winning a national sailing championship in his youth. Was it a midlife crisis? It was certainly a watershed for the journalist-turned-stay-at-home dad, who impulsively decided to throw his hat into the ring, or water, again. With the bemused approval of his wife & children, Philbrick used the off-season on the island as his solitary training ground, sailing his tiny Sunfish to its remotest corners, experiencing the haunting beauty of its tidal creeks, inlets, & wave-battered sandbars. On ponds, bays, rivers, & finally at the championship on a lake in the heartland of America, he sailed through storms & memories, racing for the prize, but finding something unexpected about himself instead. ...

Second-hand Time is the latest work from Svetlana Alexievich, winner of the 2015 Nobel Prize in Literature for inventing `a new kind of literary genre`. Here she brings together the voices of dozens of witnesses to the collapse of the USSR in a formidable attempt to chart the disappearance of a culture & to surmise what new kind of man may emerge from the rubble. Fashioning a singular, polyphonic literary form by combining extended individual monologues with a collage of voices, Alexievich creates a magnificent requiem to a civilization in ruins, a brilliant, poignant & unique portrait of post-Soviet society out of the stories of ordinary women & men. ...
