A breathtaking escape story that reveals the power of technology to connect people across cultures with life-saving results. Growing up in Yemen, Mohammed Al Samawi was smart, bookish, & committed to his faith. He had little interest in the non-Muslim world, beyond an intense hostility to Islam`s enemies. All that changed when a teacher lent him a copy of the Bible, sparking his interest in other faiths. Venturing online, he began to connect with people of different cultures from all around the world, & started the improbable journey from dreaming of taking vengeance on the `infidels` to devoting his life to inter-faith dialogue. But then Yemen crumbled into war. Trapped & alone under bombardment, he managed to get online & put his life in the hands of a rag-tag group of Facebook friends he barely knew. Near-strangers to each another, with zero experience in military strategy, the team of four, spanning New York, San Francisco, & Tel Aviv, achieved the seemingly impossible. They crowd-sourced escape routes & activated their networks to help save Mohammed from certain death. The Fox Hunt is an exhilarating real-life survival story of faith, curiosity, & the power of human connection in the face of conflict. ...

Set in the cities & islands of the Mediterranean, & linked thematically, the eight stories in The Foxes Come At Night read more like a novel, a meditation on memory, life & death. Their protagonists collect & reconstruct fragments of lives lived intensely, & now lost, crystallized in memory or in the detail of a photograph. In ' Paula', the narrator evokes the mysterious, brief life of a woman he once loved; in ' Paula II', the same woman is aware of the man thinking of her. No longer a body, she is slowly fading into the distance, remembering the time they spent together, & his fear of the black night when the foxes appear. & yet the tone of these stories is far from pessimistic: it seems that death is nothing to be afraid of. Nooteboom is a superb stylist who observes the world with a combination of melancholy & astonishment. These stories are textured with humour, pathos & vast knowledge, the hallmarks of this outstanding & highly respected European writer. ...

” My comedy career began in 1971, which proves I have no comic timing. In 1971 there were no comedy clubs, no comedy agents & not much comedy future.” Inspired by Spike Milligan, John Dowie embarked on his comedy career in a time when such a thing was virtually unheard of, & then, just as alternative comedy began to be recognised by popular culture, he quit. & so began his next obsession
- riding his bike. Having been blessed (or cursed) with an addictive personality, Dowie quickly realises that what was once a simple hobby
- cycling
- will soon become something very different... This book follows a similar route to his cycling habits: it meanders from place to place, occasionally gets lost but is unfailingly entertaining. Wending his way through France & Holl&, round the lanes of Norfolk & over the hills of Devon, Dowie expertly leads his readers on a delightful journey through the trials, tribulations & triumphs of his life so far.
