The Northwest Passage proved so elusive for so long that many sailors & explorers believed it didn`t actually exist. A sea route connecting the Atlantic & Pacific Oceans through the Arctic archipelago, it wasn`t until Roald Amundsen`s 1903-06 voyage that the Northwest Passage`s existence was finally proved, but the transit is treacherous & entirely dependent upon the ice giving up its grip for sufficient time to allow vessels through. This is not a journey undertaken by average sailors in small boats. But David Scott Cowper, 74, is no ordinary sailor. There are seven possible routes through the Northwest Passage, & Cowper had sailed through four of them singlehanded. This is the account of the fifth & most northerly
- from ocean to ocean through the Mc Clure Strait
- & the sixth, the return voyage, both times accompanied by Jane Maufe as his crew. The account of the voyage is written by Jane & she captures Cowper`s steely determination, resourcefulness in the face of adversity & humility in the wake of great achievement. Theirs is an old-fashioned relationship, where each party expects to fulfil their stereotypical roles. But Jane is no push-over
- she can steer a watch, haul large diesel cans, & leap ashore slippery pontoons with heavy ropes like the best of them. As well as a captivating story of adventurous voyaging it provides a fascinating insight into the relationship between two serious & dedicated sailors, alone together in some of the most isolated & forbidding desolate wastes on earth. It is a relationship built on respect & high expectations, mutual ambition & also self-sacrifice; the book is a uniquely revealing & charming account.

Greece has always been celebrated for its classical past, whitewashed villages & cerulean seas, but in recent years the country has been at the centre of a debt crisis that has sown economic ruin, spurred panic in international markets, & tested Europe`s decades-old project of forging a closer union. With vivid character-driven narratives & engaging reporting that offers an immersive sense of place, this comprehensive account brings to life the causes of the country`s financial collapse & examines the changes emerging in its aftermath. A rebellion against tax authorities breaks out on a normally serene Aegean isl&. A mayor from a bucolic, northern Greek village is gunned down by the municipal treasurer. An ageing, leftist hero of the Second World War fights to win compensation from Germany for the wartime occupation. A once marginal group of neo-Nazis rises to political prominence out of a ramshackle Athens neighborhood. THE FULL CATASTROPHE goes beyond the transient coverage in the daily headlines to deliver an enduring & absorbing portrait of modern Greece. ...

Vin Denson`s ” The Full Cycle” is the story of that remarkable career, one of loyalty, courage & friendship. Vin Denson was a racing cyclist for almost half a century, & his career ran the full cycle. He began as he ended
- as a typical English clubman, riding the weekly club time trial & strapping on a saddlebag for the weekend hostel tour. In between were eight glorious years spent as a professional on the Continent when he rode with & against the very best riders of his era. During that period he worked selflessly in the engine room of the peloton; he was the original `super domestique`, & Jacques Anquetil & Rik Van Looy thought the world of him, even if they showed their gratitude in totally different ways. But he was also capable of winning on his own account. In addition to many other successes, Vin was the first Briton to win a stage of the Tour of Italy, & stages in the tough Dunkirk 4-Days race. His victory in the Tour of Luxemburg made him the first British winner of a professional European stage race.
