The Great Rivers of Gelderland region of the Netherlands at 1:50, 000 in a series from Falk B.V. showing the network of signposted cycling routes on large, double-sided indexed maps with prominent highlighting of long-distance LF routes, symbols indicating accommodation & other tourist services, plus in each title two or more panels with recommended local circuits & additional tourist information. The Falk 50K cycling series, which

some adjoining areas in Lower Saxony & has now been extended to cover Flanders, shows the extensive network of sign-posted cycling routes. The network consists of numbered junctions joined by sign-posted connecting routes in either direction. At each junction there is an information panel showing an overview map of the whole network with the junction numbers. A second panel shows all the intersections directly connected to that junction. The system enables cyclists to plan their own routes by preparing a list of junction numbers through which they want to travel. Falk maps give cycling distances between the junctions & indicate which roads, both within the numbered network & outside it, have separate cycling paths. Routes which are part of the LF network of long-distance cycle routes are clearly marked. A wide range of symbols shows various accommodation options, bars & restaurants, & various places of interest. Landscape information is provided by colouring for woodlands, dunes, etc. The maps are indexed & show in the margins latitude & longitude at 1`52” intervals. Map legend

For over three thousand years, the Mediterranean Sea has been one of the great centres of world civilisation. From the time of historical Troy until the middle of the nineteenth century, human activity here decisively shaped much of the course of world history. David Abulafia's The Great Sea is the first complete history of the Mediterranean from the erection of the mysterious temples on Malta around 3500 BC to the recent reinvention of the Mediterranean's shores as a tourist destination. The Great Sea ranges stupendously across time & the whole extraordinary space of the Mediterranean from Gibraltar to Jaffa, Venice to Alexandria. Rather than imposing a false unity on the sea & the teeming human activity it has sustained, the book emphasizes diversity
- ethnic, linguistic, religious & political. Anyone who reads it will leave it with their understanding of those societies & their histories enormously enriched.

Numerous visitors to Mediterranean countries have found their holiday punctuated by trips to feed hungry feral cats. Some try to save injured & sick felines. Not many have gone to the lengths of Jenny Pulling with her one-woman campaign, Catsnip. Set against the beautiful & sinister backdrop of Sicily & its enigmatic people, the book charts Jenny`s journey as passionate defender of the island`s often abused & ill-treated cats. With no previous experience, she raises funds &, organises teams of British, American & German vets to work in improvised & clandestine surgeries. On Jenny`s voyage of discovery she encounters the wonderfully eccentric gattare (cat ladies) who devote their time to saving colonies of feral cats; she challenges Sicilian bureaucracy & risks prosecution by the authorities, unwittingly transporting veterinary but illegal drugs from the UK; & she discovers an unknown Sicily, beautiful but scarred by years of domination. Lighthearted but often incredibly moving, this is the story of one woman`s mission to rescue an animal she loves, as well as an insight into a unique culture & landscape. ...
