The Sahara Desert, February 1962: the wreckage of a plane emerges from the sands revealing, too, the body of the plane`s long-dead pilot. But who was he? & what had happened to him? Baker Street, London, June 1927: twenty-five-year-old Jessie Miller had fled a loveless marriage in Australia, longing for adventure in the London of the Bright Young Things. At a gin-soaked party, she met Bill Lancaster, fresh from the Royal Air force, his head full of a scheme that would make him as famous as Charles Lindbergh, who has just crossed the Atlantic. Lancaster wanted to fly three times as far
- from London to Melbourne
- & in Jessie Miller he knew he had found the perfect co-pilot. By the time they landed in Melbourne, the daring aviators were a global sensation
- &, despite still being married to other people, deeply in love. Keeping their affair a secret, they toured the world until the Wall Street Crash changed everything; Bill & Jessie
- like so many others
- were broke. & it was then, holed up in a run-down mansion on the outskirts of Miami & desperate for cash, that Jessie agreed to write a memoir. When a dashing ghostwriter Haden Clark was despatched from New York, the toxic combination of the handsome interloper, bootleg booze & jealousy led to a shocking crime. The trial that followed put Jessie & Bill back on the front pages & drove him to a reckless act of abandon to win it all back. The Lost Pilots is their extraordinary story, brought to vivid life by Corey Mead. Based on years of research & startling new evidence, & full of adventure, forbidden passion, crime, scandal & tragedy, it is a masterwork of narrative nonfiction that firmly restores one of aviation`s leading female pioneers to her rightful place in history.

In 1930 wealthy Scottish socialite Dorothy Brooke followed her new husband to Cairo, where she discovered thousands of suffering former British war horses leading lives of toil & misery. Brought to the Middle East by British forces during the Great War, these ex-cavalry horses had been left behind at the war`s end, abandoned as used equipment too costly to send home. The Lost Tribes Of Tierra Del Fuego: Selknam, Yamana, Kawesqar

The German missionary Martin Gusinde arrived in Tierra del Fuego in 1919. Although his initial mission was to convert the Indians among whom he lived, Gusinde in fact ended up doing the very opposite: he was to become one of the first Westerners to be initiated into the Indians sacred rites. Over the course of five years, he studied the Alakaluf, Yamana and Selknam peoples, travelling from the canals of Western Patagonia to the great island of Tierra del Fuego. Gradually, the missionary became an anthropologist. Gusindes isolation on this land at the end of the earth made his approach highly unique. Fascinated by what he saw, he took over a thousand photographs, all produced using a portable darkroom. The portraits he captured constitute a kind of genealogical and social tree.Unlike
his contemporaries, Gusinde photographed mainly the body in extraordinary manifestations: feather-clad figures sporting high head-dresses made of bark, wrapped up in guanaco furs, or entirely covered with ritual paint Captured in a landscape battered by wind and rain or covered in snow, in the heart of a natural world that Darwin celebrated for its wild and rough aspects, and framed in poses codified by ritual, these Indians bear witness to a society on the wane. Magic, spirits, communion with nature and initiatory rites draw the outlines of a world in which appearances vie with reality. The exceptional circumstances of the photos creation coupled with the personality and engagement of their author make these images a unique testimonial.
