The serene & maternal Mrs Ramsay, the tragic yet absurd Mr Ramsay, together with their children & assorted guests, are holidaying on the Isle of Skye. From the seemingly trivial postponement of a visit to a nearby lighthouse Virginia Woolf constructs a remarkable & moving examination of the complex tensions & allegiances of family life. One of the great literary achievements of the twentieth century, ` To the Lighthouse` is often cited as Virginia Woolf`s most popular novel. The Vintage Classics Virginia Woolf series has been curated by Jeanette Winterson, & the texts used are based on the original Hogarth Press editions published by Leonard & Virginia Woolf. Introductions by Eavan Boland & Maud Ellman. ...

When Christopher Rush`s wife died suddenly of cancer, leaving him with two young children, his world fell apart. He not only stopped writing, he also lost faith in everything that had informed his existence: literature, the arts, his role as teacher, his love of nature, the society of friends. Nothing could cure his almost suicidal depression. At last he decided to try to reclaim his sanity in the least expected of ways. A confirmed non-traveller, he went to France, bought a donkey & disappeared into the mountains of the Cevennes. Like a fellow Scot, Robert Louis Stevenson, who had made the same journey over a century before, he hoped to find a new reason to live. ” To Travel Hopefully” is a memoir of grief & recovery, expressed in an intensely private but universal language, which records a compelling journey of the spirit from defeat to victory. Anyone who has had to confront bereavement will find in these pages an understanding, experience & expression of the human predicament which go far beyond mere sympathy. ...

The seven-year campaign that saved Europe from Napoleon told by those who were there What made Arthur Duke of Wellington the military genius who was never defeated in battle? In the vivid narrative style that is his trademark, Peter Snow recalls how Wellington evolved from a backward, sensitive schoolboy into the aloof but brilliant commander. He tracks the development of Wellington`s leadership & his relationship with the extraordinary band of men he led from Portugal in 1808 to their final destruction of Napoleon at the Battle of Waterloo seven years. Having described his soldiers as the `scum of the earth` Wellington transformed them into the finest fighting force of their time. Digging deep into the rich treasure house of diaries & journals that make this war the first in history to be so well recorded, Snow examines how Wellington won the devotion of generals such as the irascible Thomas Picton & the starry but reckless ` Black Bob` Crauford & soldiers like Rifleman Benjamin Harris & Irishman Ned Costello. Through many first-hand accounts, Snow brings to life the horrors & all of the humanity of life in & out of battle, as well as shows the way that Wellington mastered the battlefield to outsmart the French & change the future of Europe. To War with Wellington is the gripping account of a very human story about a remarkable leader & his men. ...
