In August, 2005, Tomaz Humar was trapped on a narrow ledge at 5900 metres on the formidable Rupal Face of Nanga Parbat. He had been attempting a new route, directly up the middle of the highest mountain face in the world
- solo. After six days he was out of food, almost out of fuel & frequently buried by avalanches. Three helicopters were poised for a brief break in the weather to pluck him off the mountain. Because of the audacity of the climb, the fame of the climber, the high risk associated with the rescue, & the hourly reports posted on his base-camp website, the world was watching. Would this be the most spectacular rescue in climbing history? Or a tragic
- & very public
- death in the mountains? Years before, as communism was collapsing & the Balkans slid into chaos, Humar was unceremoniously conscripted into a dirty war that he despised, where he observed brutal & inhumane atrocities that disgusted him. Finally he did the unthinkable: he left & finally arrived home in what had become a new country
- Slovenia. He returned to climbing, & within very few years, he was among the best in the world. Reinhold Messner, among others, called him the most remarkable mountain climber of his generation. His routes are seldom repeated; most consider them to be suicidal; yet he often climbs them solo. As this book was being written, he achieved the first-ever solo ascent of the east summit of Annapurna. Tomaz Humar has cooperated with Bernadette Mc Donald, the distinguished former director of the Banff Festival & author of several books on mountaineering, to tell his utterly remarkable story.

Tombland is the seventh novel in C. J. Sansom`s number one bestselling Shardlake series. Summer, 1549. Two years after the death of Henry VIII, England is sliding into chaos... The nominal king, Edward VI, is eleven years old. His uncle Edward Seymour, Duke of Somerset, rules as Protector. The extirpation of the old religion by radical Protestants is stirring discontent among the populace while the Protector`s prolonged war with Scotland is proving a disastrous failure & threatens to involve France. Worst of all, the economy is in collapse, inflation rages & rebellion is stirring among the peasantry. Since the old King`s death, Matthew Shardlake has been working as a lawyer in the service of Henry`s younger daughter, the Lady Elizabeth. The gruesome murder of Edith Boleyn, the wife of John Boleyn
- a distant Norfolk relation of Elizabeth`s mother
- which could have political implications for Elizabeth, brings Shardlake & his assistant Nicholas Overton to the summer assizes at Norwich. There they are reunited with Shardlake`s former assistant Jack Barak. The three find layers of mystery & danger surrounding Edith`s death, as a second murder is committed. And then East Anglia explodes, as peasant rebellion breaks out across the country. The yeoman Robert Kett leads a force of thousands in overthrowing the landlords & establishing a vast camp outside Norwich. Soon the rebels have taken over the city, England`s second largest. Barak throws in his lot with the rebels; Nicholas, opposed to them, becomes a prisoner in Norwich Castle; while Shardlake has to decide where his ultimate loyalties lie, as government forces in London prepare to march north & destroy the rebels. Meanwhile he discovers that the murder of Edith Boleyn may have connections reaching into both the heart of the rebel camp & of the Norfolk gentry...
Includes: an Historical Essay from the author on Reimagining Kett`s Rebellion.

I call this book Tombstone. It is a tombstone for my foster father who died of hunger in 1959, for the 36 million Chinese who also died of hunger, for the system that caused their death, & perhaps for myself for writing this book. The most powerful & important Chinese work of recent years, Yang Jisheng's Tombstone is a passionate, moving & angry account of one of the 20th century's most nightmarish events: the killing of an estimated 36 million Chinese in 1958-1961 by starvation or physical abuse. More people died in Mao's Great Famine than in the entire First World War & yet their story remains substantially untold. Now, at last, they can be heard. Based on survivors' testimonies, this book was greeted with huge acclaim when published in Hong Kong as an essential work of reckoning. The man who exposed Mao's secret famine. (Financial Times). ...

Yang Jisheng`s Tombstone is the book that broke the silence on of one of history`s most terrible crimes. More people died in Mao`s Great Famine than in the entire First World War, yet this story has remained largely untold, until now. Still banned in China, Tombstone draws on the author`s privileged access to official & unofficial sources to uncover the full human cost of the tragedy, & create an unprecedented work of historical reckoning. ”A book of great importance”. (Jung Chang, author of Wild Swans). ” The first proper history of China`s great famine... So thorough is his documentation that some are already calling Yang ” China`s Solzhenitsyn”. (Anne Applebaum, author of Gulag: A History). ...

Although the areas covered by maps in both series are identical (apart from some border or coastal sheets), occasionally map titles differ – only one title is shown on the grid, usually the military one. In Galicia, the Basque country & in the Catalan speaking areas the tendency now is to use local place names rather than the often better known Castilian ones. Where possible, both versions are included in our titles. Map titles listed on our website are based on information received by us at the time of publication, but sometimes maps arrive showing a completely different title! As long as the map number is as ordered, the correct map has been supplied.

Tombouctou IGN Map

One of the titles in a series of topographic maps covering much of north-west Africa, produced as part of the IMW* project in 1960’s. Each map covers an area spanning 6° in longitude and 4° in latitude. There is some variation in colouring and the depiction of terrain, but hill-shading, spot heights and contours are used to show the general relief. Additional graphics show features such as dunes, rock outcrops, cliffs, sand areas, escarpments, marshes, seasonal lakes and watercourses, and areas liable to flooding. Bathymetric contours are also included.Communications detail includes roads, major trails and railways, although there is some inconsistency in colouring and the extent of classification, e.g. not all maps distinguish seasonal roads. On most maps intermediate
road distances are indicated on main routes. Symbols show airports, mosques, mines, oil and gas fields, lighthouses, ruins and significant isolated buildings. Administrative boundaries are marked and latitude and longitude lines are drawn at 1° intervals, with further margin ticks at 1’ intervals. The map legend is in French only on some sheets, and in English and French on others.*The International Map of the World was a project conceived in the early 20th century to compile a world map series at 1:1, 000, 000 through the efforts of participating nations. The value of the program has declined since 1970 and the IMW is no longer regarded as an active international series.
