Growing up in 1980s Chile, a young boy plays hide & seek in the suburbs of Santiago with his friends while the adults become slowly entangled in the violence of Pinochet's regime
- accomplices & victims of the brutal dictatorship. As the country shudders under authoritarian rule, the boy creates stories of his own to explain the sporadic scenes of violence, the disappearances, & the deafening silence of his mother & father. Until, on the night of the Santiago earthquake, a mysterious girl named Claudia appears among the children & the boy's world is changed forever. Now, as a young man reflecting on the tragedies of his childhood, he must find the courage to confront as an adult what he could not have known as a child, & to untangle Chile's troubled past. As he struggles to begin a novel which will encompass the clash between innocence & complicity, the boundaries between fiction & reality blur, & the beautiful Claudia comes back into his life. Ways of Going Home is a heartrending novel from a rising star of Latin America literature. It is the tragic story of the collateral damage caused by the Pinochet regime, & the burden borne by the new generation as they come to terms with their fragile history.

As a journalist, Kevin Bloom had witnessed & reported on the rising tide of violence in post-Apartheid South Africa. But when his own cousin was killed in a vicious random attack, the questions he'd been asking about the troubling political & social changes in his country took on a sickeningly personal urgency. Suddenly, it felt as though this South Africa was no longer the place he'd grown up in or the place which felt like home. Still stunned by the loss, Bloom begins to trace the path of violence from the murder of his cousin in the hills of Zululand to the fatal shooting of the historian David Rattray, linking these individual crimes to the riven political landscape, & the riots & xenophobic attacks of 2008. Visceral, complicated, & compassionate, Ways of Staying is an eloquent account of how the white community is coping with black majority rule, & in particular how one family is coping in the aftermath of their own private tragedy. ...

In a crumbling park in the crumbling back end of Copacabana, a woman stopped under an almond tree with a suitcase & a cigar. That was the last time anyone saw the famous Brazilian novelist Beatriz Yagoda. Upon hearing the news of her disappearance, her American translator Emma flies immediately to Brazil. There, in the sticky, sugary heat of Rio, Emma & Beatriz`s two grown children conspire to solve the author`s curious disappearance. But as the trio begins to uncover the bizarre & troubling affairs Beatriz has left in her wake -- an outstanding gambling debt, a rapacious loan shark, & the author`s long-time editor who is desperate for the next Yagoda manuscript -- they realise their search for her is far more cryptic than they could have imagined. Are the secrets to Beatriz s disappearance hidden in her enigmatic novels? Or are her words obscuring more than they reveal? Brilliant, suspenseful, & compulsively readable, Ways to Disappear is a fabulously inventive novel about the ways we do appear to one another. Both playful & profound, it is as much a mystery as it is a manifesto on the joys of translation. Idra Novey is a bold, unprecedented new voice in fiction. ...

Wayward Heroes

Published in 1952, Wayward Heroes is part of the body of works for which Laxness was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1955. It is a masterfully written tragicomedy about the oath-brothers Thorgeir and Thormod, inspired by the old Icelandic sagas Saga of the Sworn Brothers and Saga of Saint Olaf. The brothers fight for glory, raid for treasure, and seduce women against the backdrop of a new cult of Christianity. But where the old sagas depict their heroes as glorious champions, Laxness does the opposite. As Thormod avenges Thorgeir`s death, he demonstrates the senselessness of violence and the endlessly cyclical nature of obsession.
