Number One Sunday Times Bestseller Why the popular resonance of `mansplaining` (despite the intense dislike of the term felt by many men)? It hits home for us because it points straight to what it feels like not to be taken seriously: a bit like when I get lectured on Roman history on Twitter. Britain`s best-known classicist Mary Beard, is also a committed & vocal feminist. With wry wit, she revisits the gender agenda & shows how history has treated powerful women. Her examples range from the classical world to the modern day, from Medusa & Athena to Theresa May & Hillary Clinton. Beard explores the cultural underpinnings of misogyny, considering the public voice of women, our cultural assumptions about women`s relationship with power, & how powerful women resist being packaged into a male template. With personal reflections on her own experiences of the sexism & gendered aggression she has endured online, Mary asks: if women aren`t perceived to be within the structures of power, isn`t it power that we need to redefine? From the author of international bestseller SPQR: A History of Ancient Rome. ...

In trademark Beardian style, using examples ancient & modern, Beard argues, `it`s time for change

Lawrence's finest, most mature novel initially met with disgust & incomprehension. In the love affairs of two sisters, Ursula with Rupert, & Gudrun with Gerald, critics could only see a sorry tale of sexual depravity & philosophical obscurity. Women in Love is, however, a profound response to a whole cultural crisis. The 'progress' of the modern industrialised world had led to the carnage of the First World War. What, then, did it mean to call ourselves 'human'? On what grounds could we place ourselves above & beyond the animal world? What are the definitive forms of our relationships
- love, marriage, family, friendship
- really worth? & how might they be otherwise? Without directly referring to the war, Women in Love explores these questions with restless energy. As a sequel to The Rainbow, the novel develops experimental techniques which made Lawrence one of the most important writers of the Modernist movement.

The apparent glamour of the Indian Raj continues to fascinate long after the British quit the subcontinent. But along with the beauty of the Indian landscape & the privilege of servants & holidays in hill stations, British women in that vanished world faced challenges & fears that came from being an alien ruling minority. These women were at the heart of the imperial enterprise. It was their role to support the men’s work, raise the children & attempt to replicate British society thousands of miles from home. They struggled in the face of heat, illness, loneliness & boredom as well as different customs, languages & religions. The distinguished historian & bestselling author Margaret Mac Millan, drawing on letters & memoirs, novels & interviews, brings vividly to life their experiences – humdrum, extraordinary, light-hearted, tragic – at the height of the Raj, from the 1850s to Indian independence in 1947. ...

Throughout the twentieth century & long before, hundreds of determined British women defied the social conventions of their day in order to seek adventure & influence on the world stage. Some became travellers & explorers; others business-owners or buyers; others still devoted their lives to worthy international causes, from anti-slavery & women`s suffrage to the League of Nations & world peace. Yet until 1946, no British woman could officially represent her nation abroad. It was only after decades of campaigning & the heroic labours performed by women during the Second World War that diplomatic careers were finally opened to both sexes. Women of the World tells this story of personal & professional struggle against the dramatic backdrop of war, super-power rivalry & global transformation over the last century & a half. From London to Washington, Geneva to Tehran, & in the deserts of Arabia, the souks of Damascus & the hospitals of Sarajevo, resolute women undaunted by intransigent officials & hostile foreign governments proved their worth. Moved by a longing to escape domestic redundancy, to follow in the footsteps of fathers or brothers, to build a more peaceful world, to discover cultures other than their own or simply to serve the nation which denied them full equality, these women were extraordinary individuals fighting prejudice in high places. Drawing on letters, memoirs, personal interviews & government records, these heroines caught up in the larger endeavours of the world`s greatest empire are brought vividly to life to enrich our understanding of Britain`s global history in modern times. ...
