As naturopathic physicians, we have such a great appreciation for the medicinal properties of raw organic cocoa. One thing we learned in medical school isif we want to cure disease we can learnfrom populations around the world where those diseases do not exist. The Kuna people of San Blas, off the coast of Panama, are turning out to be wonderful teachers for the rest of the world thanks to the ongoing work of Norman K. Hollenberg & colleagues of Harvard Medical School. He found that the risk of heart disease, cancer, diabetes & stroke – four of the most common killers today, are almost nonexistent in these people. As part of living by their traditional ways, they drink an average of 5 cups of cocoa per day, making them the world-record holders of a flavonoid rich diet. There has been much modern research conducted on this ancient plant with astoundingly positive results. Most notably, the positive effects of drinking raw organic cocoa have been illustrated for various parameters of cardiovascular dysfunction including high blood pressure & diabetes. There is also sound research stating that cocoa has immune stimulating effects, can be used adjunctively to treat cancer, help oxygenate the brain & promotes detoxification of industrial chemicals in the body. Through randomized controlled trials, many researchers, including Fisher et al. in the Journal of Hypertension & Taubert et al. in JAMA have demonstrated that habitual cocoa intake lowers blood pressure via its high arginine content & the nitric oxide pathway. Lowering blood pressure reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease, heart attack & stroke. Other protective mechanisms cocoa can offer against cardiovascular disease come from its potent antioxidant profile. The flavonoids in cocoa raise HDL, the “good” cholesterol & both lower & protect LDL or “bad” cholesterol from being oxidized (damaged by free radicals) in the blood, which helps fight against plaque formation according to Baba et al. in American Journal of Clinical Nutrition 2007. Flammer et al. in Circulation 2007 demonstrated that cocoa reduces platelet aggregation or in other words thins the blood. Platelets are sticky little cell fragments that help our body repair injury, but can also contribute to plaque formation in the arteries. Cocoa acts as a natural blood thinner when taken daily. One of the most deadly complications from diabetes mellitus (type II diabetes) is heart disease. Cocoa protects us from these complications & also helps to promote insulin sensitivity according to Grassi et al. in American Journal of Clinical Nutrition 2005. Cancer is fast becoming the number one killer of Americans. Colon & reproductive cancers like breast & prostate cancer are among the most common types of cancers. Components of cocoa, notably the polyphenols have shown to stop proliferation of breast, prostate & colon cancer cells while sparing normal cells by researchers at Georgetown University’s Department of Oncology & others including Bisson et al. Journal of Medicinal Food 2007 & European Journal of Cancer Prevention 2008 & Carnesecchi et al. in Cancer Letters 2002. Research is also showing cocoa powder to help immune function, cognition, & detoxification. Cocoa can both upregulate specific immune cells & help modulate immune function. It appears to increase brain oxygenation which has beneficial implications for diseases like dementia. & finally, raw organic cocoa powder with its high fiber content has been shown to facilitate the excretion & detoxification of environmental contaminants from the body. ...

Cocoa nibs are cocoa beans that have been roasted, separated from their husks & broken into smaller pieces. Cocoa nibs can be eaten as a snack or added to backed goods & other dishes for added crunch & chocolaty flavor. These flavorful little pieces also have great nutritional value. Health Benefits Energy Boost: Cocoa nibs contain a substance called theobromine, a central nervous system stimulant that has a similar, though less powerful, stimulating effect as caffeine. It may give you a healthy energy boost if you're feeling low during the day. Mood Elevators: Cocoa contains tryptophan, an essential amino acid required for the production of the neurotransmitter serotonin. Enhanced serotonin levels can quell anxiety & enhance mood. Eating cocoa also helps to release endorphins, the body’s natural opiates. Endorphins are what give runners that natural high. Eating cocoa can have a similar effect & may explain why some people become self proclaimed chocoholics.PMS Symptoms: Magnesium deficiency is known to aggravate the symptoms of premenstrual syndrome. Forty percent of women admit to chocolate cravings. This may be the body’s attempt to obtain sufficient magnesium levels. Since cocoa nibs are a natural snack without added sugar, they may be a healthier way to satisfy monthly chocolate cravings. Appetite Control: Coco contains chromium an important mineral for stabilizing blood sugar & reducing appetite. Improve Circulation: Cocoa is a great source of flavanols, powerful antioxidants that play an important role in circulation. Flavanols help to prevent clogged arteries by helping to stop fatty acids from oxidizing in the bloodstream. Flavanols also help make blood platelets less sticky, which reduces the risk of blood clots, heart attacks & strokes. Improve Cholesterol Levels. Cocoa contains healthy monounsaturated fats. The same fats found in olive oil. These healthy fats have been shown to raise good cholesterol (HDL) levels. ...

BonPom RAW Cacao Paste 200g

Cacao is derived from Theobroma Cacao beans, which literally means "Food of the Gods". Cacao contains over 300 compounds including: protein, fat, carbohydrates, fiber, iron, zinc, copper, calcium and magnesium. Magnesium helps to build strong bones and is a muscle relaxant associated with feelings of calmness. Cacao is also high in sulfur, which helps form strong nails and hair.In addition, cacao also contains the chemicals phenylethylamine (PEA) and anandamide. PEA is an adrenal-related chemical that we create naturally when we're excited. It also plays a role in feeling focused and alert because it causes your pulse rate to quicken, resulting in a similar feeling to when we are excited or fall in love!Another 'bliss' chemical found in chocolate is the lipid anandamide. It's
there in our brain when we feel great. Anandamide is also called "chocolate amphetamine" as it causes changes in blood pressure and blood-sugar levels, leading to feelings of excitement and alertness.Anandamide works like amphetamines to increase mood and decrease depression, but it is not addictive like caffeine or illegal with undesirable side-effects like amphetamines. Anandamide is quite unique in its resemblance to THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), a chemical found in marijuana. The good news is that even though the anandamide in chocolate helps to create feelings of elation, the effect is not the same as the THC in marijuana. It would take approximately twenty five pounds of chocolate to achieve a 'high' similar to marijuana and the nausea would overpower any feelings of bliss at all.
