Myrtle oil is produced by steam distillation of the leaves twigs & sometimes flowers of this fragrant shrub which grows wild across Southern Europe & Northern Africa. Myrtle has a gentle camphoraceous aroma which is also sweet & fresh. It blends well with Lavender Rosemary Clary Sage spice oils Bergamot & other citrus oils. For a cleansing uplifting aroma try 3 drops of Myrtle with 2 drops of Bergamot & 1 drop of Lime in a burner or diffuser. Other members of Myrtle’s family include Tea Tree & Eucalyptus & as can be expected from this it is highly anti-septic & clearing. Myrtle is not as harsh as its relatives & is ideal to be used on children. To keep winter chills at bay try diffusing 2 drops of Myrtle in a child’s bedroom half an hour before bedtime. As its aroma is less stimulating than other anti-septic oils try adding 4 drops of Myrtle & 2 drops of Bergamot (blended in 10ml of Sweet Almond oil) to warm bathwater at bedtime (halve the number of drops for children from 3 to 12).
