With its nearly 5, 000 m of altitude, its glaciers, its walls of red granite, Mont Blanc is one of the most spectacular natural monuments of the Old Continent. Begun during the Age of Enlightenment with the first attempts to climb the 4, 810 m peak, the climbing history of this mountain continued throughout the centuries. Today, the grand exploits of champions such as Christophe Profit, Michel Piola & Patrick Gabarrou are seen beside the lesser-known adventures of thousands of climbers coming from every corner of the earth. The story & pictures of the ascents of the greatest mountaineers of all times are an exciting encounter for the shrewdest reader-mountaineer, as well as for those approaching the magic of high altitudes for the first time. A description of the seven valleys crowning the giant & an illustrated chronology of over two centuries of undertakings on Mont Blanc complete the book. ...

Ski map of the Mont Blanc area at 1;50, 000 from the Swisstopo, the country national survey organization, with an overprint highlighting ski & snowboarding routes & additional colouring to show slopes steeper than 30°. The main map extends from Chamonix & the Mont Blanc massif east wards to Etroubles in Italy, & north/south from Mont Dolent to La Thuile. On the reverse a panel extends coverage westwards within France to include St-Gervais-les-Bains, Les Houches & La Contamines-Montjoie (with routes but without the additional colouring). Ski maps in this series from Swisstopo show routes for skiing and/or snowboarding, access by public transport, recommended itineraries, lists of mountain huts, etc. The series uses the cartography of Switzerland’s topographic survey, with additional colouring to show slopes steeper than 30°. An overprint highlights ski routes, indicating suggested direction, difficult passages & sections which must be covered on foot. Also marked are areas where it is forbidden to leave the routes shown on the map. The maps also highlight roads with bus routes, indicating individual bus stops, show ski lifts & funiculars, plus mark locations of refuges or other mountain accommodation. Each title has the Swiss national grid at intervals of 1km, plus latitude & longitude margin ticks at 1’. Some titles cover a larger area, with a part of an adjoining sheet printed on the reverse of the main map as indicated on our series grid. Where appropriate, ski information extends across the border to France & Italy. On the reverse are itineraries of routes recommended by the Swiss Alpine Club, indicating the degree of difficulty, plus lists of alpine huts with contact details. Map legend for the overprint
