On 19 August 1953 the British & American intelligence agencies launched a desperate coup against a cussed, bedridden 72-year-old. His name was Muhammad Mossadegh, the Iranian prime minister. To Winston Churchill he was a lunatic, determined to humiliate Britain. To President Eisenhower he was delivering Iran to the Soviets. Mossadegh must go. & so he did, in one of the most dramatic episodes in modern Middle Eastern history. But the countries that overthrew him would, in time, deeply regret it. Mossadegh was one of the first liberals of the Middle East, a man whose conception of liberty was as sophisticated as any in Europe or America. He wanted friendship with the West
- not slavish dependence. Here, for the first time, is the political & personal life of a remarkable patriot, written by our foremost observer of Iran. Above all, the life of Muhammad Mossadegh is a warning to today`s occupants of Downing Street & the White House, as they commit us all to intervention in a volatile & unpredictable region.

` Talking much is a sign of vanity, for the man who is lavish with words is cheap in deeds.` Sir Walter Ralegh Sir Walter Ralegh was a writer, poet, soldier, politician, courtier, spy & explorer. He lived more lives than most in his own time, in any time. We do not even know when this fifth son of a Devonshire gentleman was born, yet he went on to `climb full high` in the England of Queen Elizabeth I. How was such a man able to do this? His life was romantic, irresistible & of central importance to early modern history. Prone to periods of extreme melancholy alternating with extreme activity, here was a liar who believed his own lies. He had a hunger for life, a longing for death, a passion for words.. . & a love of silk stockings. Always driven, & always consumed with wonder, Ralegh was a man who pored over maps, asking dangerous questions of the world around him. His death is a convoluted & contested tale of bargaining, failure & betrayal. Through the Elizabethan golden age & Ralegh`s famous adventures to the final act, Anna Beer presents his stranger-than-fiction life in all its richness. ...

A reissue of Simon Schama`s landmark study of the Netherlands from 1780-1813, this is a tale of a once-powerful nation`s desparate struggle to survive the treacheries & brutality of European war & politics. Between 1780 & 1813 the Dutch Republic
- a country once rich enough to be called the cash till of Europe & powerful enough to make war with England
- was stripped of its colonies, invaded by its enemies, driven to the edge of bankruptcy, &, finally, reduced to becoming an appendage of the French empire
- an appendage not even the French seemed to value overmuch. Out of these events Simon Schama has constructed a gripping chronicle of revolution & privateering, constitutions & coups, in a tiny nation desperately struggling to stay afloat in a sea of geopolitics. Like his classics ` The Embarrassment of Riches` & ` Citizens`, ` Patriots & Liberators` combines a mastery of historical sources with an unabashed delight in narrative. The result confirms Schama as a historian in the finest tradition
- one whose study of the past reveals volumes about the present. This is one of our most revered historians` greatest works, & this new Perennial edition will reintroduce his genius to a new generation of readers.

` Already loose sand had drifted over the stamped-down square which momentarily had distinguished the subaltern`s grave: no there was no sign, no mark, no indication whatsoever. There had been, here, eleven men. Now ten rode away` In the Mesopotamian desert during World War I, the leader of a British patrol is shot & killed, by an unseen enemy. The officer is the only one who knows their orders & has not told anyone else where they are located. From then on the sergeant has to try to lead the men through a hostile desert landscape which is full of invisible Arab snipers. One by one they are picked off, & the group of diverse characters from different backgrounds has to try to come together in order to survive. The decision making process proves far from easy as tensions & prejudices from their former lives come to the fore. This thrilling tale of suspense goes right to the last page & was a best seller in the 1920s. The novel was filmed twice, by Walter Summers (as Lost Patrol in 1929) & by John Ford (as The Lost Patrol in 1934). ...

From the Sunday Times bestselling author of 50 People Who Buggered Up Britain, Quentin Letts, comes his blistering new book on how Britain`s out-of-touch, illiberal elite fills its boots.`HILARIOUS` Daily Mail` With its vicious takedowns, Quentin Letts` laugh-out-loud Patronising Bastards will have the lefty-elite running scared` The Sun Not since Marie Antoinette said ` Let them eat cake` have the peasants been so revolting. Western capitalism`s elites are bemused: Brexit, Trump, & maybe more eruptions to follow. But their rulers were so good to them! Hillary Clinton called the ingrates `a basket of deplorables`, Bob Geldof flicked them a V sign, Tony Blair thought voters too thick to understand the question. Wigged judges stared down their legalistic noses at a surging, pongy populous. These people who know best, these snooterati with their faux-liberal ways, are the ` Patronising Bastards`. Their downfall is largely of their own making
- their Sybaritic excesses, an obsession with political correctness, the prolonged rape of reason & rite. You`ll find these self-indulgent show-ponys not just in politics & the cloistered old institutions but also in high fashion, football, among the clean-eating foodies & at the Baftas & Oscars, where celebritydom hires PR smoothies to massage reputations & mislead, distort, twist. Political columnist & bestselling author Quentin Letts identifies these condescending creeps & their networks, their methods & their dubious morals. Letts kebabs them like mutton. It`s baaaahd. It`s juicy. Richard Branson, Emma Thompson, Shami Chakrabarti, Jean-Claude Juncker & any head waiter who calls you `young man`
- this one`s for you!
