The Radnor Ring Cycle Route at 1:100, 000 approx. in a series of cycling maps from Sustrans, the charity behind developing UK’s National Cycle Network. The map is printed on light waterproof & tear-resistant synthetic paper & presents a circular route No. 825 linking Builth Wells, Rhayader, Knighton & Kington. The accompanying text on the reverse of the map is in English & Welsh. Each title in the Sustrans series of cycling maps covers either a single route, presented in sections on separate strip maps, or a wider area with the main cycling route (s) prominently highlighted but other recommendations for cyclists also marked. The area covered each map is shown on our website on its individual “coverage” image. The route has markers indicating steep gradients, controlled access, distances & possible danger points. Route profiles indicate riding surface & the density of traffic (main road, minor road & traffic-free) &, where appropriate, street plans show the course of the route across towns & cities. On maps covering a wider area around the main National Cycle Route suggestions of possible day ride excursions are also marked. A range of symbols highlight various facilities & places of interest, including tourist information centres, youth hostels, cafes & pubs, grocery shops, cycle shops & hire, historical & natural sites, etc. For access by rail, the rail network is shown with stations &, where appropriate, metro stations are also marked. Radnorshire, an original antique map by G. Cole / J. Roper, published in London, c. 1804 -1810. A copperplate engraving, original colour. Map size 23 x 17.5 cm with a mount size of 37.5 x 33 cm.A detailed nineteenth-century map of Radnorshire that was published in the atlas, The British Atlas; Comprising A Complete Set Of County Maps, Of England & Wales; & Plans Of Cities & Principal Towns in 1810. The map was drawn by G. Cole & engraved by John Roper for publication in The Beauties Of England & Wales, that was published in parts, from c.1804. Such was the success of the publication that the maps were re-used in other publications, as here. The maps show accurate geographical detail, including the turnpike, mail coach & principal roads, sites of Roman & other historical remains, as well as the seats of the nobility & the gentry, & market towns with their distances from London. By the time of his death, Thomas Stamford Raffles (1781-1826) was the founder of Singapore & Governor of Java, having left school in his early teens to become a clerk for the British East India Company. Charismatic & daring, Raffles forged an extraordinary path for himself in South East Asia
- refusing to be satisfied with the trading posts available to the British, he defied Dutch governors & wrangled with warring local rulers to establish what is now a world city. An ardent linguist & zoologist, Raffles spoke fluent Malay & found time to write The History of Java, as well as naming several species of flora & fauna he discovered on his travels. He founded London Zoo & promoted the study of Malay alongside European languages in Southeast Asia. Raffles remains a controversial figure
- a utopian imperialist, disobedient employee & knight of the realm who died deeply in debt, predeceased by all but one of his children. He built racial segregation into his urban planning, but was also a staunch abolitionist. Renowned biographer Victoria Glendinning charts Raffles` prodigious rise in this new edition, specially updated for the bicentenary of the foundation of Singapore in 1819. His life was short, complicated & shot through with tragedy, but Raffles` fame lives on.
