Tepelena Prefecture at 1:90, 000 in a series of handy size, waterproof & tear-resistant, contoured & GPS compatible road maps from the Tirana-based publishers Vektor. Landscape is presented by altitude colouring & contours lines at 100m intervals, with spot heights & a few more names of topographic features than found on Vektor’s 200K road maps of the country. National parks & nature reserves are prominently highlighted. The prefecture maps appear to show the same small local dirt roads as in the 200K series, but given the increase in scale do so with greater clarity & also provide more detailed GPS coordinates (latitude & longitude lines are drawn at 5’ intervals), useful when travelling across the more remote parts of the country. Railway lines are included & local airports are marked. Symbols highlight campsites, beaches, archaeological & historical sites, caves, etc. The maps also show subdivisions of prefectures & names of the communes, & indicate administrative status of towns. Tequila Oil is an account of Hugh Thomson`s first wild adventure in Mexico, which ignited his love for Latin America, & of his subsequent exploration of the country, its people & its history. Tequila Oil reveals a much more dangerous side of Mexico than that seen by the package holiday-makers, taking the reader from the badlands of Chihuahua to the forests of the Yucatan; the book ends deep in the Mexican jungle, face to face with one the most enigmatic & least understood cultures on the planet, the Maya, with a sense of humility at how little we still know about the pre-Columbian past. Just as in The Motorcycle Diaries, by throwing himself on the kindness, hospitality & mercy of the Mexicans he met (or crashed into), Hugh was given an unusual & peculiarly vulnerable insight into Mexico. He returns many years later with a deeper understanding & the ability to explore the deep roots of pre-Columbian culture within Mexican life & to see how much archaeologists have revealed about the Maya & the Aztecs in just the last few years. ...
