London suffered a great deal of bomb damage between 1939-1945, the impact of which is still evident in its urban & social landscapes. As a key record of the attack, the London County Council Bomb Damage Maps represent destruction on a huge scale, recording buildings & streets reduced to smoke & rubble. The full set of maps is made up of 110 h&-coloured 1:2500. Ordnance Survey base sheets originally published in 1916 but updated by the LCC to 1940. Because they use the 1916 map, they give us a glimpse of a lost London, before post-war redevelopment schemes began to shape the modern city. The colouring applied to the maps records a scale of damage to London’s built environment during the war the most detailed & complete survey of destruction caused by the aerial bombardment. The book contains a colour-coded key that explains the extent of the bomb damage from total destruction to minor in nature. The key is detachable so can be used as a bookmark. There is an overview area map so you can look at the area of London & see the individual corresponding map. Additional chapters cover incidents, statistics, recording ruin, the attack on London & conclude with a chapter on photographing war damage in London that

The London Football Companion follows the history of the sport in the capital, from its foundations in the days of gentleman amateurs to the obscene wealth & tabloid scandals of the modern age. As it winds its way postcode-by-postcode from Westminster to Watford via all points in between, it takes in everything from bungs & brawls to tantrums & transfers. The Brewer Street kebab shop that cost Paul Gascoigne a trip to the 1998 World Cup, the traffic jam on Tottenham High Road that made Roman Abramovich give up on his plans for Spurs & buy further west, & the Central London pub where the FA was founded are just some of the places that feature in the stories, scandals, tragedies & triumphs that make up the footballing heritage of our capital. The London Football Companion takes an anecdotal look at the capital's clubs & how football has evolved over the decades, from Premiership giants Arsenal, Chelsea & Tottenham, through characterful sides like Charlton, Crystal Palace, QPR & Millwall, to Sunday league football on Hackney Marshes. What emerges is a wonderfully rich, entertaining & compulsively browsable history of the beautiful game. ...
