John Higginson’s Cicerone guide to The Way of St. James
- A Cyclists’ guide is a unique book dedicated to those wanting to travel one of the most historic routes in Europe by bike. This ever-popular cycle route runs from Le Puy in France to Santiago de Compostela in Spain & covers a total of 1570km. Using roads with a good surface for touring cyclists, the guide follows the route of the original pilgrimage as closely as possible & provides the opportunity to visit every major church & shrine along the way, with a few visits to outlying monasteries for good measure. The guide is organized into 27 stages in total, with the average distance on most days being 50km, which should easily be within range of the moderately fit. Each stage has an information box describing the route, surfaces, warnings & also the sites along the way. Gradient diagrams also give an idea of how difficult the day’s cycling is likely to be. A detailed introduction
