Native to Southeast Asia, cinnamon is a spice made from the inner bark of the genus cinnamomum, an evergreen of the laurel family. There are two main varieties of cinnamon
- cinnamomum zeylanicum, known as true cinnamon, & cinnamomum aromaticum, also known as cassia. The historical use of cinnamon can be traced back to 2000 BC in Ancient Egypt where it was highly valued & used as a form of currency. The beneficial properties were utilized by ancient health practitioners such as Dioscorides & Galen & have been used to alleviate stomach cramps, intestinal spasms & flatulence. More recently, studies heve shown that supplementing the diet with Cinnamon can contribute to normal blood sugar levels, & it can be safely used for extended periods of time.
