The Arcteryx Covert Hoody has been around forever, but this year it has been redesigned with a much enhanced fit. The body has lost that square boxy shape & has been tailored to offer a slimmer yet still relaxed fit. The body is now also a bit longer for enhanced insulation & the arms have been lengthened & shaped to make them more practical & comfortable. Arcteryx have used a new fabric, which retains that marled wool look so familiar to Covert fans. The fabric is called Alpenex Heathered & is 100% polyester with a smooth surface, just like wool,  with a brushed fleece inner. The fabric provides superb insulation, wicks moisture & dries quickly so it is perfectly suitable for use as a technical mid layer, but I suspect that most of the time the Covert Hoody will be used for slobbing around town as it just so comfortable. The Covert Hoody features flat lock seams for strength & low bulk, no lift gussetted underarms for freedom of movement, a low profile Scuba Hood, two zipped hand pockets & a laminated arm pocket. The Fission SV has been the toughest, warmest & most waterproof jacket from Arcteryx for years & this season sees it re-designed to make it more comfortable, stronger & just better. The Fission SV features a new Gore-Tex Pro outer shell with reinforced 3 layer fabric across the main abrasion areas with a lighter more breathable 2 layer Gore-Tex Pro fabric. Both these fabrics have a softer feel & move quietly to eliminate that annoying Gore-Tex rustle. Insulation is provided by their own Coreloft synthetic fibres which is zoned to optimise performance. Coreloft 100 g/m² is used under the arms to increase movement & increase breathability, whilst Coreloft 140 g/m² is used in the rest of the construction to maximise warmth. The benefits of Coreloft insulation is that it resists compression better than down, it is durable & resilient, & should the jacket become soaked, it will retain warmth & dry quickly. A fully insulated & helmet compatible Drop Hood provides essential protection & is attached to an insulated high collar. When not required the hood drops out of the way leaving the high collar to provide warmth & seal out the wind. There are also plenty of storage options with two chest pockets, two hand pockets & two internal mesh pockets. All external pockets use Water Tight zips & the main zip has a Water Tight Vislon zip all of which are highly water resistant but not completely waterproof. Arcteryx have applied their genius E-3D patterning which uses clever design & construction techniques to improve the fit, enhance mobility & reduce overall weight. The end result is that the Fission SV feels fantastic on giving you a real sense of comfort & protection.
