The secret to the  Neo Air XTherms performance is the clever  Therma Capture triangular core. The mat is basically air filled, & that air is trapped in hundreds of triangular internal chambers with a reflective surface that bounces your radiant body heat back into your sleeping bag & away from the cold ground. Cold air is also reflected back to the ground so it cannot penetrate your body. This clever construction does away with the need to insulate the internal space of the mat with an insulating material, keeping the weight to a minimum. Because there is no filling the whole lot packs down incredibly small. This mat is constructed with horizontal baffles which increase stability & reduce the bounce normally associated with longitudinal baffles. The fabric of the mat is a tough yet very lightweight high tenacity 30D  Nylon, & the bottom fabric is a super tough 70D soft grip Nylon for increased durability. This mat has a R-Value of 5.7 which in real terms relates to true 4 season performance, so it is perfectly suitable for use on snow or frozen ground. R-Values are an international standard of insulation & (in simple terms) indicate the materials ability to reduce heat flow through conduction, radiation or convection. Therefore the higher the R-value, the lower the heat transfer & the greater the insulation properties of the material.
