Old maps from late 18th & 19th century reproduced by the Old Folding Maps company & mounted on cloth. Each individual map is presented folded in a colourful case covered with a unique design marbled paper – no two cases are identical. Many of the reproductions have been taken from what used to be called “cloth-dissected” maps, made when the map itself was cut into sections & each section then individually pasted onto an overall cloth backing for the whole map. In these reproductions the whole map is backed onto cloth in one piece, but the gaps between the sections have been reproduced in the printing to preserve the style & the feeling of the originals. Cartography varies according to the original source; more details & images are provided with each title. ...

Navigating the Mississippi River from Minneapolis to New Orleans, Raban opens himself to experience the river in all her turbulent & unpredictable old glory. Going wherever the current takes him, he joins a coon-hunt in Savana, falls for a girl in St Louis, worships with black Baptists in Memphis, hangs out with the housewives of Pemiscot & the hog-king of Dubuque. Through tears of laughter, we are led into the heartland of America with its hunger & hospitality, its inventive energy & its charming lethargy & come to know something of its soul. The journey is as much the story of Raban as it is of the Mississippi. Navigating the dangerous, ever-changing waters in an unsuitably fragile aluminium skiff, he immerses himself with an irresistible emotional intensity as he tries to give shape to the river & the story finding himself by turns vulnerable, curious, angry &, like all of us, sometimes foolishly in love. ...
