At a time when the nature of Scottish identity is a much-debated issue this book is particularly opportune. Macdonald traces the art of Scotland from its prehistoric beginnings to the time of writing. Because of the long period covered, the information on individual artists & movements is understandably brief but the books succeeds in conveying a sense of continuity in style & themes in Scottish art along with the variety & diversity of the contributions. Contains lots of colour reproductions of the paintings & sculptures & has an excellent bibliography at the end for further reading.
