Shanghai: a global city in the midst of a renaissance, where dreamers arrive each day to partake in a mad torrent of capital, ideas & opportunity. Rob Schmitz is one of them. He immerses himself in his neighbourhood, forging relationships with ordinary people who see a brighter future in the city`s sleek skyline. There`s Zhao, whose path from factory floor to shopkeeper is sidetracked by her desperate measures to ensure a better future for her sons. Down the street lives Auntie Fu, a fervent capitalist forever trying to improve herself while keeping her sceptical husband at bay. Up a flight of stairs, CK sets up shop to attract young dreamers like himself, but learns he`s searching for something more. As Schmitz becomes increasingly involved in their lives, he makes surprising discoveries which untangle the complexities of modern China: a mysterious box of letters that serve as a portal to a family`s
- & country`s
- dark past, & an abandoned neighbourhood where fates have been violently altered by unchecked power & greed.A tale of twenty-first-century China, Street of Eternal Happiness profiles China`s distinct generations through multifaceted characters who illuminate an enlightening, humorous &, at times, heartrending journey along the winding road to the Chinese dream. Each story adds another layer of humanity to modern China, a tapestry also woven with Schmitz`s insight as a foreign correspondent. The result is an intimate & surprising portrait that dispenses with the tired stereotypes of a country we think we know, immersing us instead in the vivid stories of the people who make up one of the world`s most captivating cities.

“ Street Without A Name” is a wry, vivid & honest recollection of, & reflection on, modern Bulgaria from poet & travel writer Kapka Kassabova. An irreverent & revealing personal portrait of a little-known country perched on the eastern edge of Europe
- captured by one of its most eloquent & engaging expats. After years on the outside, Bulgaria has finally made it into the EU club, but beyond the clichés about undrinkable plonk, cheap property, & assassins with poison-tipped umbrellas, the country remains a largely unknown quantity. Born on the muddy outskirts of Sofia, Kapka Kassabova grew up under Communism in the 1980s, got out just as soon as she could, & has loved & hated her homeland in equal measure ever since. In this darkly comic & unflinchingly honest memoir, Kapka revisits Bulgaria & her own muddled relationship to it, travelling back to the scenes of her childhood, sampling its bizarre tourist sites, uncovering its centuries’ old history of bloodshed & blurred borders, & trying to understand the absurdities & idiosyncrasies of her own & her country’s past.

With a history going back 2000 years it is hardly surprising that so many of London`s streets are known throughout the globe. Even today, several Roman roads pass through the capital & London`s financial centre, The City of London is full of winding alleys & ancient ways with names from times gone by. Over the years the City`s streets have become less familiar than roads in & around the West End & for this reason The Streets of London: The story behind London`s most famous streets is primarily about roads in the City of Westminster & the Royal Borough of Kensington & Chelsea. ...

200 countries; one street each; seven years of travelling & collecting photos, stories, facts & figures about each country. This is not just another photography book. It reveals everything that a street means to society: education, wisdom, youth, experience, happiness, stories, food, & so much more. This is the raw material of life, drawn directly from the experiences of the Belgian photographer Jeroen Swolfs. Seeing the street as a unifying theme, he travelled in search of that one street in each place
- sometimes by a harbour or a railway station
- that comprised the country as a whole. Each stunning image conveys culture, colours, rituals, even the history of the city & country where he found them. Swolfs sees the street as a universal meeting place, a platform of crowds, a centre of news & gossip, a place of work, & a playground for children. Swolfs`s streets are a matrix for community; his photographs are published at a time when the unique insularity of local communities everywhere has never been more under threat.

Can traumatic life events cause depression? Studies generally point to a connection between adverse life events & depression. However, establishing a causal rather than associative connection, the key concern of this 2004 book, is more problematic. What neurobiological changes may be induced by stress & depression, & to what extent do these changes correspond? The authors structure their examination around three major themes: the pathophysiological role of stress in depression; whether or not a subtype of depression exists that is particularly stress-inducible; &, finally, how best to diagnose & treat depression in relation to its biological underpinnings. ...
